Number Trick

Think of a number, any positive integer (but keep it small so you can do computations in your head).

1. Square it.
2. Add the result to your original number.
3. Divide by your original number.
4. Add, oh I don't know, say 17.
5. Subtract your original number.
6. Divide by 6.

The number you are thinking of now is 3!

How did I do this?

Presentation Suggestions:

Ham it up with magician's patter. Step 4 could be anything you want --- someone's age, or their favorite number --- just ask the crowd for suggestions. (This will change the final outcome of Step 6, but see below for how)

The Math Behind the Fact:

Clearly no matter what you start with, the answer should come out the same (zero wasn't allowed because of Step 3). We can see why this trick works by using a little bit of high school algebra! If you follow the instructions starting with the variable X instead of an actual number, you will see that X is eliminated by Step 5.

Using this idea, you can make up your own mental math trick right on the spot! (Just don't do anything too obvious, like tell people to add 5, subtract their original number, and say "the number you are thinking of is 5").

Today is the 11th Septerber - One year on.

No matter how bad you want to forget it, you will always remember where you were on that day. You will always remember that day asking yourself "Please god, is this over yet?". You will always remember seeing 2, 110 story buildings crash to the ground knowing thousands were on the inside including rescuers.

Two hijacked planes crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center. Thousands of people were killed by the impact, and by the dramatic, and tragic collapse of the buildings. Many more are injured in an almost simultaneous attack on the Pentagon in Washington DC. It is the single largest terrorist attack that the world has ever known, and sends shock waves across the world.

Hot weather

Periods of extremely hot weather -- heat waves -- can cause serious health problems for everyone. In fact, among weather-related events, heat waves are a leading cause of death.
Normally, the body cools itself by sweating. If temperatures and humidity are extremely high, however, sweating is not effective in maintaining the body's normal temperature. When this happens, blood chemistry can change and internal organs -- including the brain and kidneys -_ can be damaged. Heat also can be stressful if the temperature changes suddenly, since it usually takes several days for the body to adjust to heat.
The most common heat-related conditions are heatstroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, sunburn and heat rash. Heatstroke and heat exhaustion are the most serious conditions.

The break up

The new comedy, played by Jennifer Aniston. It is very nice and funny.
She has joined Vince Vaughn for "The break up", a comedy from Universal Pictures.

Story: After Brooke (Aniston) calls it quits with her boyfriend Gary (Vaughn), neither person is willing to move out of the condo they share. Taking the advice of their repsective friends and confidants (and a few total strangers), they both engage in mental warfare designed to force the other person to flee the premises -- until they both realize they might be fighting to keep their relationship alive.

To sum up, "The break up" is a pleasant surprise to the open-minded.

If you've seen Vince Vaughn recently, you might wonder what happened to the young buck from Swingers. A little jowly, a bit beaten-down, world weary to the point of being cynical - in a relatively short space of time the man who looked like a refugee from the Rat Pack has transformed into a pissed-off, pudgy chap with little to look forward to except further loosening his belt.

Vince Vaughn on "The Break-Up," the inspiration for the anti-romantic comedy, working with Jennifer Aniston, and the final scene. "The Break-Up" has been inaccurately described as this summer’s first romantic comedy, a misleading and inappropriate label. There’s nothing romantic going on in the Vince Vaughn/Jennifer Aniston film and there’s very little real comedy either.
