On October 16, 1859, he led 21 men on a raid of the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. His plan to arm slaves with the weapons he and his men seized from the arsenal was thwarted, however, by local farmers, militiamen, and Marines led by Robert E. Lee. Within 36 hours of the attack, most of Brown's men had been killed or captured.

The Pilgrims, who celebrated the first thanksgiving in America, were fleeing religious persecution in their native England. In 1609 a group of Pilgrims left England for the religious freedom in Holland where they lived and prospered. After a few years their children were speaking Dutch and had become attached to the dutch way of life. This worried the Pilgrims. They considered the Dutch frivolous and their ideas a threat to their children's education and morality.
So they decided to leave Holland and travel to the New World. Their trip was financed by a group of English investors, the Merchant Adventurers. It was agreed that the Pilgrims would be given passage and supplies in exchange for their working for their backers for 7 years.

Long ago, people called Pilgrims left their home in England and came across the ocean to America in a boat called the Mayflower. They built their own houses, planted seeds they had brought with them, and made friends with the Indians, who were already living in America. The Indians taught them how to plant corn and hunt and fish for animals that they could eat. In the fall, when the corn was ready, the Pilgrims picked it. It was their first harvest, and when they had finished, they had a party to celebrate and give thanks that they had enough food to last through the winter. The party, called the First Thanksgiving, was held outside, and everyone came, including the Indians. Now every year we celebrate Thanksgiving to remember the brave Pilgrims and to give thanks for all of our blessings.

Remembrance Day, also known as Poppy Day and Armistice Day is a day to commemorate the sacrifice of veterans and civilians in World War I, World War II, and other wars. Three years later an American, Moina Michael, was working in a New York City YMCA canteen when she started wearing a poppy in memory of the millions who died on the battlefield.
During a 1920 visit to the United States a French woman, Madame Guerin, learned of the custom. On her return to France she decided to use handmade poppies to raise money for the destitute children in war-torn areas of the country. In November, 1921, the first poppies were distributed in Canada.

Speak without Fear

Surround Yourself with English

The absolute best way to learn English is to surround yourself with it. Take notes in English, put English books around your room, listen to English language radio broadcasts, watch English news, movies and television. Speak English with your friends whenever you can. The more English material that you have around you, the faster you will learn and the more likely it is that you will begin “thinking in English.”

This is different than watching the television or films because you can’t see the person that is speaking to you. Today is the 11th Septerber - One year on.

No matter how bad you want to forget it, you will always remember where you were on that day. You will always remember that day asking yourself "Please god, is this over yet?". You will always remember seeing 2, 110 story buildings crash to the ground knowing thousands were on the inside including rescuers.

Two hijacked planes crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center. Thousands of people were killed by the impact, and by the dramatic, and tragic collapse of the buildings. Many more are injured in an almost simultaneous attack on the Pentagon in Washington DC. It is the single largest terrorist attack that the world has ever known, and sends shock waves across the world.

Hot weather

Periods of extremely hot weather -- heat waves -- can cause serious health problems for everyone. In fact, among weather-related events, heat waves are a leading cause of death.
Normally, the body cools itself by sweating. If temperatures and humidity are extremely high, however, sweating is not effective in maintaining the body's normal temperature. When this happens, blood chemistry can change and internal organs -- including the brain and kidneys -_ can be damaged. Heat also can be stressful if the temperature changes suddenly, since it usually takes several days for the body to adjust to heat.
The most common heat-related conditions are heatstroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, sunburn and heat rash. Heatstroke and heat exhaustion are the most serious conditions.

The break up

The new comedy, played by Jennifer Aniston. It is very nice and funny.
She has joined Vince Vaughn for "The break up", a comedy from Universal Pictures.

Story: After Brooke (Aniston) calls it quits with her boyfriend Gary (Vaughn), neither person is willing to move out of the condo they share. Taking the advice of their repsective friends and confidants (and a few total strangers), they both engage in mental warfare designed to force the other person to flee the premises -- until they both realize they might be fighting to keep their relationship alive.

To sum up, "The break up" is a pleasant surprise to the open-minded.

If you've seen Vince Vaughn recently, you might wonder what happened to the young buck from Swingers. A little jowly, a bit beaten-down, world weary to the point of being cynical - in a relatively short space of time the man who looked like a refugee from the Rat Pack has transformed into a pissed-off, pudgy chap with little to look forward to except further loosening his belt.

Vince Vaughn on "The Break-Up," the inspiration for the anti-romantic comedy, working with Jennifer Aniston, and the final scene. "The Break-Up" has been inaccurately described as this summer’s first romantic comedy, a misleading and inappropriate label. There’s nothing romantic going on in the Vince Vaughn/Jennifer Aniston film and there’s very little real comedy either.
